• Educational Conferences

  • FPA generally holds two educational conferences per year.

  • The fall FPA 2010 Publishing Ed-U-Conference: “Experience Speaks!” is scheduled for October 9 at the Helmsley Sandcastle Hotel on Lido Beach in Sarasota. Featured guest speaker is book marketing guru John Kremer (1001 Ways to Market Your Books). Details on the Ed-U-Conference can be found by clicking HERE.

  • FPA also plans to offer virtual events in the very near future.

  • The FPA Sell More Books! Newsletter

  • The FPA Sell More Books! Newsletter is a great source of information for publishers, authors and vendors. It generally comes out 8-10 times per year, and past issues can be viewed at HERE. The newsletter has been on a brief hiatus while this website was being built, but it will resume in September.

  • Display Opportunities

  • FPA offers members (discounted cost) and nonmembers an opportunity to have their books and book products displayed at both the spring FLA (Florida Library Association) and the fall FAME (Florida Association for Media in Education’s Annual Conference annual conferences. FAME members are school librarians, now known as media specialists, kindergarten through college, public and private. For FAME display registration information, click HERE.

  • Annual President’s Book Awards Competition

  • In 2005, then-President Dinah Arnette began a book awards competition only for members of FPA. The entries for 2010 are listed in the FPA Bookstore under the 2010 Entries category. The awards banquet for 2010 is scheduled for the evening of Saturday, October 9, at the Helmsley Sandcastle Hotel on Lido Beach in Sarasota. To register for the awards banquet, click HERE.

  • Discounted Membership in FPA Affiliate Groups

  • If you are a current FPA member and would like to join either IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) or SPAN (Small Publishers Association of North America), there is a nice discount available to you. Check with IBPA to learn about the FPA affiliate discount, and with IBPA about the FPA Partner discount.

    IBPA Affiliate Scholarship Program

Our affiliate, Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), generously offers FPA members the opportunity to apply for a scholarship to its annual Publishing University, held just before BookExpo America. The scholarship details vary each year, but the scholarship generally covers tuition for the full, two-day Publishing University. FPA offers a stipend to help defray travel and lodging costs.

In 2010, the Publishing University was held May 24–25 at The Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. The two scholarship winners for 2010 were Kyle Miller from Jungle House Publications on Sanibel Island and Dr. Pedro Soto of Soto Publishing Company in Dade City. Kyle will give a presentation on what she learned at the October 9th FPA 2010 Publishing Ed-U-Conference. Pedro will present at the Winter/Spring educational event (location and date TBD).

A call for applicants is generally issued just before the first of the year. Applicants’ companies must be members of both IBPA and FPA, and the individuals must be integral employees or owners of the publishing company — preferably just starting out in publishing. An application is completed and submitted to FPA, the Board of which reviews all applications and recommends to IBPA’s Board its choices to receive the scholarships. The IBPA Board makes the final selection of scholarship recipients.

FPA requires that scholarship recipients share the information they learn with FPA’s membership by writing articles for the FPA Sell More Books! Newsletter and giving a presentation at the FPA Publishing Ed-U-Conference in the fall.

FPA Available to Answer Publishing Questions

There’s no reason to go it alone in publishing when you’re a member of FPA. Many members have found that the best membership benefit is the ability to email FPA (FPAbooks@aol.com) with publishing questions. We offer quick, industry-standard answers, and when we don’t know the answer, we find someone who does!
